The Florida State University Libraries are devoted to offering as many resources to distance learners as possible.

An online step-by-step reference guide called Resources for Distance Learners is available that is designed to

  1. familiarize distance learners with the FSU Libraries’ website and
  2. teach distance learners how to use the numerous resources effectively.
Do I need a special account to access the FSU Libraries’ resources at a distance?

Some of the Libraries’ resources require a user name and password because of licensing restrictions with the database providers. The Libraries’ catalog and research guide do not require a login; however, databases, e-books, and e-journals generally do require a login. To access all of the Libraries' resources from a distance, start at the Libraries' website. In the upper right-hand corner of the screen, select "Remote Access." Enter your user name and password when prompted. You only need your FSU ID and password (what is this?). This is the same ID and password you use to login to Blackboard.

Traditionally, when a student wants to access library resources (such as university restricted materials), the student has to be logged on to a campus computer. However, the FSU library system allows students to access the FSU Library resources anywhere through a proxy server that recognizes them as FSU students or affiliates. Therefore, materials such as academic publications that are stored in systems like JSTOR or GALE are available for free to students wherever they choose to access the information.

What kind of information can I find in the guide, Resources for Distance Learners?

  • Information on accessing the Libraries’ resources at a distance by logging into the off-campus access system.
  • Finding Articles – where to look in the FSU Libraries’ system; types of information typically found in articles; differences between peer-reviewed and popular articles; search engines for the most used databases and Academic Search Complete.
